I couldn’t believe what had happened; I just couldn’t believe they were dead. I had my face I my hands bent over in a chair at the funeral. Tears slowly trickled down my face as I thought more about how horrible this was and how much I would miss my family, they were dead and there wasn’t anything anyone could do to change that.
A girl around my age came up to me and put her hand on my shoulder. I could tell it was Joanetta by her musky scent, back then I had very much taken a liking to her, but not even she could help me now. She bent down and whispered reassurances in my ear that everything would be fine and then she went else where.
I was miserable and also I was angry, angry at whom had done this, and I know who had done this. I just knew it was the nigger slave we’d had, it just had to be. Everyone said that there was no way he had done it ‘cause he had been sick and in bed resting when it’d happened, and he was so sweet wouldn’t hurt a fly. I knew better than that, the nigger wasn’t a very nice man, and was only sweet to people he had to be sweet to. It had been the nigger.
Anger overwhelmed my senses as I stewed in it some more, I would make the slave pay. I would have to find ‘im first though. After my family had been found dead the slave was supposed to go to me but some legal swish-swash about how I didn’t inherit him ‘cause my family didn’t really own him so he was to go to the auction house. On the way there he had escaped some how and now they were hunting for him. Still after that not alot of people thought he had killed my parents and sister! It was insane.
If no one was going to make sure the slave got what was comin’ to him then I would. It would be my duty to find him, and kill him. It would be hard but I would never be able to rest easy until I knew it was taken care of.
Joanetta came back and put her arms around me and I put my arms around her. We just hugged each other for what felt like forever and one day then it broke as her dad called for her to go home. So she said goodbye and left. The funeral was over pretty much now, the preacher had preached for long drawling minutes taking about how tragic this was and how they were in a better place now, it was silly.
I had some thinking to do, I needed to clear my head a little further and figure out what I was going to do now. I wiped my eyes on the back of my hand and wondered where the slave was now and what he was thinking, how scared he must be. Scared that someone was coming for him, scared of getting caught. ‘He should be scared…’. I thought to myself as I glanced at the coffins of my family. I would avenge them, even if it killed me.
